Morocco's exception is confirmed at the top of world football

Among the eight teams through to the 2026 World Cup quarter-finals, one name stands outside football's usual geography: Morocco.

Of those eight sides, seven come from Europe or South America: France, Spain, Belgium, Norway, England and Switzerland from the old continent, Argentina from South America. Morocco is the sole representative of the rest of the world.

This is not new: back at Qatar 2022, Morocco was also the lone exception among the final four, alongside Argentina, France and Croatia, becoming the first African and Arab nation ever to reach a World Cup semi-final.

This repeat performance confirms that the Atlas Lions' success was no isolated flash, but a lasting pattern breaking Europe and South America's traditional monopoly over the world's elite.

Morocco now face a daunting test in the quarter-final against France themselves, in a match with all the flavor of revenge for the 2022 Qatar semi-final.
