«Morocco punishes every space» — Koeman defends his tactical choices before stepping down

After the Netherlands were knocked out of the 2026 World Cup by Morocco on penalties, Ronald Koeman mounted a firm defence of his surprise tactical decision: switching to a five-man backline for the first time in 31 consecutive matches. More than that — he said he would do it all again.

A system change that caught everyone off guard

Koeman's switch to a back five was unexpected enough to catch Morocco coach Mohamed Ouahbi off guard, who admitted he was "taken aback by the formation". The decision was made collaboratively with the players — it was not a unilateral call.

"All of Holland wanted five defenders"

Koeman confirmed that public and media pressure had been pushing exactly in this direction — and he agreed with it, for a clear tactical reason: "All of Holland was asking for five defenders. Leave space against Morocco and you're asking for trouble." A candid acknowledgment of just how dangerous Morocco are in transition.

"I'd do it all the same way again"

Despite the defeat, Koeman stood by his call: "If I had to do it again I'd do it all the same way." He also pointed out that the Netherlands had conceded fewer goals after making the switch to five defenders, compared to their group stage performances.

A resignation without tactical regret

Koeman resigned hours after the match — but he left without second-guessing his football decisions. He took responsibility as head coach while never using the system he chose as an excuse for the exit.
