Netherlands: Ronald Koeman resigns as head coach after World Cup exit at the hands of Morocco
Ronald Koeman has announced his resignation as Netherlands head coach on Instagram following the Oranje's elimination by Morocco on penalties in the round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup.

Ronald Koeman has resigned as Netherlands head coach following the Oranje's painful elimination from the 2026 World Cup at the hands of Morocco. The 63-year-old announced his decision on Instagram in an emotional statement that combined sporting accountability with deeply personal reflections.
"The responsibility rests with me"
In his statement, Koeman wrote: "Last night I took the decision to end my stint as head coach of the Dutch national team. We all shared the dream of making history at this World Cup, but we fell short. No one is more disappointed by that than I am. As head coach, the responsibility ultimately rests with me."
A painful exit on penalties
The Netherlands were knocked out by Morocco in the round of 32 after a 1-1 draw through extra time, with the Atlas Lions prevailing in the penalty shootout. It was a bitter end for a Dutch team that had far greater ambitions heading into the tournament.
Personal words behind the decision
Koeman did not limit his statement to football. In a moving passage, he reflected on what truly matters: "The past few years have made me realise once again that there are more important things than football. Health is priceless. When someone you love dearly is fighting a tough battle, your perspective changes. Despite her own illness, my wife Bartina supported and encouraged me every day to finish my work as head coach."
Ambitions that went unfulfilled
Nigel de Jong, the KNVB's technical director, had set the target of a semi-final run and a tilt at the title. An exit in the round of 32 represents a significant underperformance for a nation that had hoped this home-continent World Cup would mark the return of Dutch football to the very top.
