FIFA has ruled: the governing body rejected the French Football Federation's request to cancel the yellow card Michael Olise received during the round of 16 win over Paraguay.
Head coach Didier Deschamps confirmed the news at a press conference: "FIFA sent us a notification this morning confirming it has been maintained."
The decision reignites debate over inconsistent treatment, after FIFA had previously suspended the automatic ban for American forward Folarin Balogun following a red card, allowing him to play normally against Belgium, with no comparable explanation given this time for denying France's request.
With the card upheld, Olise will enter the quarter-final against Morocco carrying a yellow card, meaning any further caution would automatically rule him out of a potential semi-final should France advance.
