Brazil needed a dramatic late goal from Gabriel Martinelli to see off a spirited Japan 2-1 in Houston, surviving one of the scares of the Round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup.
Sano shocks Brazil
Japan stunned the five-time champions when Sano pounced on a mishit pass, surged into space and fired low past the Brazilian goalkeeper in the 29th minute. For much of the first half, Japan looked capable of a major upset.
Casemiro and Martinelli rescue Brazil
Casemiro headed Brazil level in the 56th minute, but Japan held firm until Bruno Guimarães found Martinelli deep in stoppage time (90+5'). The Arsenal forward finished low to spark wild Brazilian celebrations and avoid extra time.
Norway next for Brazil
Brazil will face a Norway side inspired by Haaland (five goals in the tournament) in the Round of 16 on July 5 in New York — a blockbuster tie in prospect.
