After Morocco's 0-2 defeat to France in the 2026 World Cup quarter-final, goalkeeper Yassine Bounou was candid about the gap between the two sides: "We faced a superior team, that is the truth. Even tactically, we couldn't impose our superiority because they were better than us in every aspect."

Bounou explained that Morocco knew from the outset they couldn't match France in open play, hence a plan built around possession and a collective defensive block, before attempting to break through the French defense and create chances — an attempt that didn't succeed, with the team not at its best either technically or psychologically.

Despite the defeat, Bounou was named Morocco's best player of the match with a rating of 8.0/10, thanks to several decisive saves that kept the scoreline from being even heavier.
